a Gandharva (Gandharva) (後世には Gandharva は一類と見なさるるも、RV. においては一者のみ言及さるること多し。天の Gandharva(divyá g˚)と称せられ、また Viśvā-vasu・Vāyu-keśa とも呼ばる。その住処は天、また空と天の水との領域なり。その特なる務めは天の Soma を守ることにして、神々はその仲立ちにより之を得。人の類のためには Indra が Gandharva を降して力ずくに之を奪う。天の Gandharva は良き医とせらる。Soma が最良の薬と見なさるるが故なり。ただし Soma は本来飲料にあらず月を指せしやも知れず、天の Gandharva は月の守護神なりしやも知れず。RV. ix, 86, 36 においては天の Gandharva と Soma とは同一視さる。また日の馬らの運行を司る精霊の一とせらる。天の秘義と神的真理とを知りて之を告ぐ。人の最初の一対 Yama と Yamī との親にして、女に対し特殊の神秘的な力と之を領する権とを有す。この故に婚礼の儀に祈願せらる。恍惚の状態と悪霊憑きとは天の Gandharva に由るとせらる〔cf. -gṛhīta, -graha〕。一類としての Gandharva らも同じ特徴を有す。天に住み、Soma を守り、Varuṇa に統べられ〔Apsaras らが Soma に統べらるる如く〕、最良の薬を知り、宿の運行を司り〔故に二十七を数う〕、女を追いてこれと交わらんと欲す。娘が婚齢に達すれば Soma・Gandharva ら・Agni に属す。Gandharva らの妻は Apsaras らなり〔cf. gandharvâpsarás〕。彼らと同じく賭博に際して祈願せらる。また Rākṣasa・Kimīdin・Piśāca 等と共に悪しき存在として恐れられ、之を防ぐに護符を著く。Vāc に Veda を開示せしと言われ、Ṛṣi らの師と呼ばる。Purūravas は彼らの中に数えらる。叙事詩においては Gandharva らは天の楽人にして、神々の宴に楽を奏し、Apsaras らと共に Indra の天に属し、その戦にも与る〔cf.
